Personal Relevance Voting
- Time: 2-7 minutes
Display a list of relevant items in an attractive way, for example each written on a different coloured note. Ask people to read them all and put a marker (dot, tick, emoji) next to the ones that are most important and/or relevant for them personally.
The list of relevant items are related to the topic of the rest of the learning hour. They could be:
- tools and techniques they might have used before
- learning goals for the upcoming session
- controversial statements they may or may not agree with
- concrete problems they may have experienced
- terms and definitions they use in their company
The idea is there are no right or wrong answers, voting for one or other of these items indicates a personal preference or past experience. Sometimes you will want to give people a limited number of votes so they actually need to prioritize and can’t just vote for all the items without thinking first.
Optional follow-up
When they have voted, ask people to return to their tables or breakout rooms. Give them 3-5 minutes to explain to one another why they picked those items.
Benefits
This activity has people start to think about what they already know about the topic, and what they want to learn in the session. If you include the follow-up, it lets them discuss more about what they hope to learn and to connect with one another.
